Master Your Pickleball Serve: Proven Techniques to Improve Accuracy and Consistency

A strong serve in pickleball makes up a large portion of points won (some players report up to 70%). The serve is such an important skill because it not only sets the tone for the game but it adds immense pressure on the opponent. The server often goes into the point with the intention of controlling the point, but with a bad serve, the server will be in a defensive position. This leads to easy points not only off of the return of serve but from weak third shot hits. To improve accuracy and consistency of the serve, practice holding the paddle, proper hip rotation, and proper follow-through. To improve technique, practice both the underhand serve and the topspin to keep your opponents guessing.

Understanding the Importance of Serve Accuracy in Pickleball

When your serve lands in your desired location, you have served accurately. We want serve accuracy because it allows for a better chance for success in our match. We can target our opponents’ baseline area weaknesses. We also can serve to help set up the point scheme in a certain way. Additionally, being able to serve to a particular area is an awesome skill set we should build as it can present an opportunity to score on the next shot. In this scenario, our second shot has a higher chance of success off the opponent’s weak return!

When we consistently practice and make several serves go where we want them to go, we grow confidence. When we grow our confidence, the idea is we also grow in all aspects of the match including strategically and shot aggressiveness. You just need to remember when you perform well, it’s a very good sign to keep working and building your confidence and skills.

Every player must master the fundamentals of a proper grip and stance if they want to improve. Your grip is what gives you control of the handle rotating around in your hand and your stance gives you the stability and power needed to perform a great serve. All players should focus on finding a grip that suits them, and they should experiment to see what feels most comfortable. This learning experiment will drastically alter what they perceive as an effective shot.
