What follows is a compilation of some essential information about how to play safely on a wet court. Understanding Court Conditions

Ball bounce, movement, and gameplay in pickleball can ALL be significantly affected by wet courts. When the court’s surface is even slightly moist, the ball will be more likely to skid on the bounce instead of bouncing high in the air. This can lead to unpredictable skid points and make it difficult for a player to time or determine the trajectory of the ball. This can obviously throw off any potential strategies or shots and mess with the timing.

Furthermore, the ground or court surface players are standing on can become extremely slippery in wet conditions and cause players to fall and potentially injure themselves. If you are slipping and sliding around everywhere, it might not only be dangerous, but it could also be disturbing to gameplay. After all, a player needs to be able to move to locations quickly. Examine the court’s conditions before you play the next time it’s raining. Wet conditions will dramatically affect the gameplay conditions of pickleball games and can be quite inconvenient.

Safety Tips for Playing on Damp Courts

Playing on wet courts adds an element of risk so we should treat safety as the primary importance. We can help by ensuring we use footwear with good traction. A shoe made for wet conditions is likely to provide more confidence for the player and allow them to slip less. Try to avoid movements with quick changes in direction. Sometimes this is unavoidable but minimizing risk is what matters. Wet surfaces are wet surfaces and they can react differently on each occasion when changing direction quickly.

When it comes to your paddle, there are items on the market that are naturally water-resistant; the same applies to footwear. I also use waterproof baggage to keep my gear together when stored and this way, my gear is kept protected. On each occasion you play, ensure when you get home that you dry out your gear. Use a towel or small cloth to dry off the water and keep the bag open to let it air dry.

Techniques for Playing on Wet Courts

Making adjustments to your strategy and style of play is essential. All movements should be performed at 3/4 speed. This lowers the falls and slippage due to a loss of balance. Rather than moving in an explosive manner, one should place more emphasis on footwork with slow and deliberate steps. You should also focus more on properly placing yourself in the best possible position for shot-making. Meanwhile, more sensitive touch should be focused on. As a result, the perfect relationship is formed: less slippage because one doesn’t have to rush, an easier time being able to prepare and swing, and overall, an effective strategy for returning shots on a damp court. Some drill sequences can include punching a volley whereas conditioning agility exercises can involve both lateral and diagonal sprinting.

When to Play and When to Postpone

Before you leave for a rainy game of pickleball, check the local weather. Rain not only inhibits visibility but also makes the courts slick and dangerous. One quick search on the weather app can let you know if it will keep raining or if you should expect the weather to clear up shortly.

Check your court. What are the conditions like? Should you even play in these conditions? Be smart about it. Is the ground underneath the courts going to hold water in certain areas, creating a difficult, slippery, muddy, or water-filled court? If so, postpone playing today. No one wants to get hurt and be out for days or weeks. Be smart and make it fun.

Playing pickleball on wet courts can be challenging and downright dangerous. Performing a simple risk assessment prior to playing can save you a lot of future issues, wet surfaces can increase the chance of slipping or falling. Players should make a more conscious decision about their shoes and develop a better understanding of foot positioning and movement during play. Pickleball is all about footwork but some preparations on a wet day could lower the likelihood of any injuries.
